CAVE Session 02

Imagine all gains and advancements of our civilization are suddenly gone. Bruce Sterlings creates a scenario about a lonely man sitting in front of his netbook in his new flat. There are no physical objects in the rooms, except for a huge clump of natural ABS plastic and his fabricator. All the goods he need to live, he has to print himself: a toilet, a bed and tableware. "Possessions are over. They are data!"
The lapse of possessions would evoke a new form of existential design. How would these products be designed and what would they look like? This project explores the aesthetic and functional potential of immersive crafting methods.
Within the "Spatial Sketching" workshop with Christian Zöllner, Johann Habakuk Israel and the Fraunhofer IPK Institute in Berlin, I had the opportunity of sketching in an immersive CAVE. Fascinated by its naive potential, my aim of this research project was the embedding of recent developments in virtual crafting technologies into conceptual future scenarios.
The final models were 3D-printed and illustrate an existential moment in everday life.
